Former soccer star Karenna Groff underwent a catastrophic plane crash that resulted in her death, along with several family members. The US National Transportation Safety Board stated that the family was taking a holiday celebration trip when the incident occurred.
Karenna graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was renowned for her football skills. During her senior year, she was named Women of the Year by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 2022. She planned to follow in her parents’ footsteps and become a doctor, enrolling in medical school at New York University. She was an inspiring icon for many athletes.
There is still no public confirmation of what caused the plane crash. There have been reports that Karenna’s father, Michael Groff, was flying the plane. Michael was known to have experience with piloting, but nothing has been confirmed of him flying the plane. Air traffic control did try to contact the pilot several times before the incident was reported, but there was no response from the aircraft. There is a chance that reduced visibility played a role in the accident, due to the weather conditions that were present during the flight.
Regardless, the colleges and their athletes both shared the grief of Karenna and her family. She will be remembered as a great person that people will continue to look up to for many years to come.
