US becoming Authoritarian?

In this political climate, even a blind man can see that things are getting intense. From election security agencies being cut to the insanity of deportation without trials – it’s understandable why the world has become tuned out from all this pushback from the Trump administration. And to the absolute shocking news of no one, scholars are viewing these past situations as troubling.

In a survey of approximately 500 political scientists, the majority believe that the United States is transitioning from American democracy to a version of Authoritarianism. Used on a scale between 0 and 100, the score was now estimated to be at 55. 0 being dictatorship and 100 being democracy: when Trump first elected for his second term, it was  67 – a clear stark drop.

Some of The Bright Line Watch surveyists don’t view Trump as a problem. However, they also agree with the majority that the President is leading America in the wrong direction. A section had already viewed the President’s attempts to expand executive power. Political scientists view this style as similar to countries such as Hungary and Turkey.

This viewpoint adds to Trump’s latest actions: attacking the media, withholding billions of dollars from universities, and framing freedom of speech as “terrorism”. It’s obviously troubling what’s happening but all we can do is survive. It’s a tough road ahead but there is still light at the end of the tunnel.
