Spain and Portugal Experience Massive Power Outage

Recently, Spain and Portugal have been trying to maintain the chaos sowed by the power outages that have hit the countries. This odd occurrence happened this Monday without warning, leaving many cities and homes without electricity. The cause for the outages is still unknown, though some speculate that the extreme weather created a rare mishap.

The power outage has affected many traveler’s flight plans and traffic has become a whole ordeal thanks to the lack of traffic lights. Phones now have limited use and can’t be charged in most households. The outage even led to some people getting stuck in elevators and subways. One saving grace is that most hospitals have backup generators that are there for these kinds of situations. The government said that this could potentially be a sign of a cyber-attack, but so far, there is nothing concrete that points to that being the case. Portugal notes that there will be increased security on the streets for the time being.

Some parts of Portugal and Spain have restored power, but there is still no telling when everywhere else will be receiving power. Although the public has been assured that the power will be returned soon, the damage that the outage could cause will only get worse if it isn’t fixed. Many of the local grocery stores have no power for refrigeration, risking the produce to spoil. Many jobs are also tied to internet access, making it difficult for workers to get their jobs done. We can only hope that power will be returned soon and that the cause of the outage will be discovered.
