Amazon Walks Back Idea To Display Tariff Cost On Product Prices

Amazon reportedly opened up to the idea of displaying the cost of the Trump administration’s tariffs next to the total price of products on its website. However, the global tech company quickly walked back the idea after receiving massive pushback from the White House and other Republican politicians.

According to NBC News, Trump shared his displeasure with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos early Tuesday morning about the idea during a phone call. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted Amazon’s idea at a press briefing, calling it a “hostile and political act.”

“Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt continued.

Shortly after the briefing, Amazon attempted to clear the air through an interview with CNBC with a spokesperson. Revealing that the idea was never seriously considered or even approved for all Amazon properties.

Despite Amazon walking back on the idea, some Democratic politicians in Washington, DC, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, call for other companies to go through with it.

“To the large businesses that sell to consumers, I say: show your customers how much tariffs are hurting in their pocketbooks,” said Schumer. “People deserve to know the impact tariffs have on their finances.”

Amazon and Bezos slowly began to ally themselves with the Trump administration ever since he was sworn into office. It is unclear how this move will impact the company’s rapport with the Trump administration.
