Have you ever thought working five days in a row was just too much? Have you ever wanted a day between Saturday and Sunday to rest because two days of rest are just not enough? Well, for New York City, employees are getting closer to a shorter workweek than ever.
Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest, representing the 57th Assembly District in Brooklyn, introduced two pilot programs aimed at reducing the five-day workweek to four. If these bills are passed, New York would be one step closer to a 32-hour workweek, Fox 5 reports.
These pilot programs would establish a four-day workweek instead of five for state employees. The programs would also offer tax incentives to private employers if they run the pilot.
The bills, Assembly Bill A5423 and Assembly Bill A5454, were introduced in February of this year and are currently under consideration in Committee.
For private employees, Bill A5454 would amend the state’s labor law and would offer tax credits of up to $250,000 per employer or $5,000 per participating employee as an incentive to private employers.
For state employees, Bill A5423 would amend New York state’s civil service law. The bill also ensures that employees who participate in the program will not experience cuts in their salary and benefits.
