Lorde’s “Virgin” Will Capture the Politics of Gender, Autonomy and Refusal

Lorde is a generational artist unafraid to make bold statements. She’s been releasing music since 2012 and signed with Universal Music Group at just 13 years old. Her records have topped charts, and her distinctive sound has earned her critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.

Each of her albums offers both personal and cultural commentary. “Pure Heroine” critiques fame and materialism with tracks like “Royals.” “Melodrama” dives deep into emotional honesty and the complexities of young adulthood. In “Solar Power,” she steps back from fame, embracing simplicity, nature and introspection.

Her upcoming album, “Virgin,” is set to release on June 27, 2025. In a note to fans, Lorde described it as “a document that reflected my femininity: raw, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, masc..”

The album will include 11 tracks, with the lead single “What Was That” having dropped on April 24.

Fans are already speculating that “Virgin” will reflect everything Lorde stands for. It will be bold and vulnerable and definitely influential. The album art, released April 30, features an X-ray image of her pelvis alongside her belt buckle and an IUD. It is an imagery that signals an unflinching look at the physical and emotional realities of womanhood.

At the 2025 Met Gala, Lorde teased that her outfit included an Easter egg related to the album, saying, “To me it really represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman.”

Early conversations around “Virgin” suggest it will explore themes like reclaiming bodily autonomy, gender fluidity and a rawer, more visceral approach to music. One thing is certain—Lorde continues to use her art as a powerful vehicle for expression and resistance.
