No Salon, No Problem: Embracing DIY Haircuts

I’ve been thinking about cutting bangs for a while, and the other day I decided to just go for it. I took out a pair of scissors and cut them right then, right there. It’s not unusual for me; I often give myself these DIY haircuts. When I casually mention this to my friends, however, they meet me with a shocked and deeply concerned reaction. Apparently my “who cares it’s hair” mentality isn’t as widely shared as I thought. So no, I’m not crazy, I just think doing it yourself is the cheaper and more empowering way to go.

For me, going to the salon often feels like a recipe for disaster. You book the appointment, wait weeks to go in and then are subjected to whatever your stylist’s vision is. That’ll be a no for me. When you take the scissors into your own hands, you’re able to decide exactly how you want to look and when. It’s a chance to experiment and express yourself without the pressure. You’re not just saving money, but also reclaiming control over your appearance.

Beyond the freedom, there’s also practical benefits. The main one being cost. A trip to the salon nowadays might cost you nearly $100. That’s money many of us simply can’t afford to spend on a new look. When you do it yourself, it means you can give yourself a quick refresh whenever you want. No appointments, no waiting rooms. When you’re juggling a busy schedule it’s honestly not realistic to block off portions of your day for hair cutting. Having the convenience at your fingertips (literally) is a total game-changer.

It is normal to be afraid, though. Hair can be a large part of someone’s identity, and putting it in the hands of an unprofessional (you) can be intimidating. The best part, though, is that hair does grow back. It’s not a high-stakes event and sometimes imperfections might just lead you to your favorite new look. Mistakes aren’t the end all be all, they’re part of the process of taking a chance. And hey, maybe it might force you into letting go of your perfectionism. With just a little patience and a shift in attitude, cutting your own hair might just become enjoyable.

DIY haircuts don’t have to be this scary thing everyone makes it out to be. Not only does it save time and money, but it also gives you a way to take back control and build unexpected confidence. So the next time you have the urge to grab those scissors, just go for it. You might find yourself rocking headbands like me for a bit, but it’s just hair — and it’ll all be fine. I can even send you the link to these new barrettes I just got.
