Opposites attract. A statement that is as old as time itself. Not surprising how it continues to apply in the modern dating landscape. However, what if I told you that politics can play a role in that realm? Especially with the rise of Gen Z in the fold, it’s getting more apparent. But instead of attracting, it’s dividing.
A recent NBC News poll has showcased this development. Gen Z men lean towards conservative values, while Gen Z women are rather liberal. Based on 18 to 29 demographics, 53% of Gen Z women and 35% of Gen Z men identified as democrats. On the other side, 38% of Gen Z viewed themselves as Republicans.
Once again, opposites attract, right? No, this is rather a nightmare for many. In my experience, regarding dating and social gatherings. It can honestly be a turn-off when someone spouts an ideology from the jump.
Not to say I’m not confronting those instances, but that should not be your personality. A controversial take is one thing — everyone has that. Though certain pushback on issues such as human rights and immigration policies is where I pull the plug.
Amidst the Tri-State area, it’s far likely to see a person who wears a liberal mask publicly but when all lights are off — those conservative viewpoints are held. Who would blame them, considering most people will look at you in ire if you are a vocal Make America Great Again (MAGA) and Trump supporter.
Regardless, I’m a proponent of meeting in the middle. I still lean towards democrat, but if you go a bit too extreme, I probably have to take a step back.
A difference of political opinion is human, but if you don’t at least share core values and show respect for those principles, then the road to commonality will get grim by the time.
