Why Terraforming Mars Is a Pipedream

One idea people seem to be pushing is the idea of moving to Mars and even terraforming the planet to be habitable for humans. While the idea sounds pleasant, it’s so unrealistic it’s flat out impossible.

The biggest reason for terraforming Mars being an impossibility is magnetic fields or more accurately Mars’ lack of one. One of the major reasons why Earth is suitable for life is its strong magnetic field. Without it, we would be constantly under threat from solar radiation and we would quite literally be fried as particles would constantly bombard the planet’s surface. If humanity ever hatches a plan to terraform Mars, this is the biggest problem that would need to be solved. Without a magnetic field, Mars will remain inhospitable to life.

Mars’s atmosphere poses another challenge, as it’s thin and primarily carbon dioxide. Its atmosphere is highly dangerous for us to breathe in and would require an extensive amount of constant work that we aren’t equipped to do. This results in the biggest argument against the idea of terraforming Mars, being that were already barely capable of taking care of Earth. If the ecosystems of Earth keep degrading and we keep polluting our environment as we continue to fail to save it, terraforming Mars to be hospitable would be completely out of the question.

Another thing often brought up is that there were signs of water once being present on Mars in addition to its ice caps. While this is true, it’s currently only a possibility as it’s currently theorized to be located deep within the planet itself. Getting enough water out of the planet to form an ocean on its surface, assuming it is there, is insanely difficult and an unrealistically difficult task. While the idea of terraforming Mars is pleasant to think of and would be a great accomplishment if properly achieved, doing so is so insanely difficult it’s quite literally impossible.
