NJ Hiker Found Dead on Mount Marcy Identified

The identity of the hiker who slipped and died on Mount Marcy has been released by State Police. 21-year-old resident of Brick, NJ, Brianna L. Mohr was hiking with her dog on Mount Marcy last Thursday, February 12, 2026. Near the summit, she slipped and was unable to make it back to the trail.

Mohr called 911 at 3:05 pm to report she had fallen and needed help. Forest rangers quickly jumped into action, using snowmobiles and other utility vehicles to search for her. A NYSP Aviation helicopter was also deployed in an effort to spot the missing hiker from above.

However, thick cloud cover impeded their efforts. At 6:06 pm, one of the rangers in the helicopter was relocated to aid the search on the ground. The ground search was run out of Marcy Dam Outpost.

After nearly 7 hours of searching, at 9:51, forest rangers were finally able to locate the Mohr. Unfortunately, Mohr was found unresponsive and declared dead. Her dog was found and recovered by the rangers. Her body was unable to be retrieved at that time due to poor weather conditions.

A NYSP Aviation helicopter was sent the next morning, Friday, February 13, 2026, and two rangers were able to reach the site and recover her body for transportation down the mountain. An autopsy was conducted on Saturday, February 14, 2026, by forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Sikirica at Glen Falls Hospital. It was determined that Mohr died of hypothermia.

Mount Marcy, part of the Adirondacks, is located in Keene, Essex County, in upstate New York. It is the tallest peak in the state at over 5,300 feet tall. A popular place to visit in the High Peaks Wilderness Area of Adirondack Park, winter hiking is made more dangerous by subzero temperatures, deep snow drifts, icy trails, and strong winds, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
