The Possible End of the Nurse’s Strike

On January 12, 2026, almost six weeks ago, over 15,000 nurses across various hospital systems within New York City walked out and started the strike. It has been known as the longest and largest nurses strike in New York City history according to the New York State Nurses Association.

Over a week ago on February 11, 2026, nurses from the Mount Sinai and Montefiore hospitals ratified a new contract that will be upheld for the next three years. The nurses from those hospital systems have ended their strike since reaching this deal. However, 4,200 nurses from New York Presbyterian have remained on strike because no agreement was made in their favor.

Today, a tentative agreement has been made with the New York State Nurses Association and New York Presbyterian through a mediator. This agreement, which was announced after midnight this morning, includes a 12% pay raise over the span raise, similar to the contract made by the other hospital systems. Furthermore, the agreement with New York Presbyterian states that there will be an increase in staffing, better implementation of workplace safety measures, and closely maintaining nurse’s benefits.

Nurses from New York Presbyterian are set to vote on ratifying the contract starting today. In the last two weeks, this is the second contract they are set to vote on as they rejected the contract signed by nurses from other hospital systems. The rejection was due to nurses believing the original deal did not include a sufficient amount of staffing increase or safety measures.

If the contract is ratified, it will mark the official end of the historic nurse’s strike. The contract is still awaiting ratification, and could be changed after the voting process concludes.
