Let’s just face it—not everyone can be like FDR.
It was the trust that FDR earned from U.S. citizens that granted him a third and fourth term. His courage and determination were the pivotal factors that allowed him to alter the trajectory of a downward-spiralling country. Roosevelt revived America, giving it the strength that it once lost and giving American citizens hope again.
It was this level of leadership that allowed the country to invest their faith in him time and time again. Roosevelt served a total of four terms before his passing during the beginning of his fourth term. He served as the leader of the United States for about 12 years, and left behind an unforgettable legacy that will forever be a significant part of American history.
And then we have President Trump–
To juxtapose Franklin Roosevelt and Donald Trump would be like comparing apples to oranges—they are, in fact, not the same…at all.
Donald Trump has hinted at possibly serving a third term despite the U.S. Constitution prohibiting presidents from serving more than two terms. It would be interesting to see how the current president attempts to work around the 22nd amendment to extend his current run in office.
The issue with Trump’s determination to serve a third term is that his leadership is simply not as stellar as Roosevelt’s. Under his presidency, Donald Trump has encouraged racially prejudiced views, creating an incredibly tense and hostile dynamic within our social landscape. The amount of arrests on illegal immigrants at the hands of ICE has increased under his run, sending many into a frenzy and stripping individuals away from their families. His administration has also fought against both the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights and has played an influential role in making the U.S. a less inclusive nation.
Trump’s criticisms of this year’s super bowl performance exhibit his inability to accept and appreciate other cultures. His presidency has ultimately offered a glaze of comfortability over white supremacist views, encouraging more people who hold racially insensitive sentiments to express them freely. He seeks little to no redemption as he continues to stand by his deeply offensive comments and polarizing views.
So all in all, President Trump serving a third term would be absolutely nuts. It is almost certain that Trump’s ability to run for president again is nearly impossible, but his desire to do so is incredibly frightening and could pose significant risks for the future of the U.S. Trump has created irreparable damages that have harmed American society, and an extension of his reign in office would only make matters worse.
