Sports bars have always been a hot spot for social interaction amongst adult communities. For many years, they have been a place where several people kick back to watch sporting events, eat a good meal, and have a drink after a busy week of work. The addition of alcohol can sometimes create a hostile environment where individuals tend to escalate small conflicts and turn them into major trajedies—or at least that was the case for two men who got into a serious altercation at a sports bar in Queens, New York that led to the shooting of one of the individuals involved. While it is unclear if either of the individuals consumed alcohol and whether it played a role in the tragedy, the conflict between the two men led to a fatal ending with one man succumbing to gunshot wounds found in his stomach and neck.
The incident started with an altercation taking place at an El Catracho Sports Bar on Jamaica Avenue on February 21. 34-year-old Denis Nunez got into a fight with another man at the bar. As the brawl went on, the man shot Nunez multiple times before running away. Two other men ran Nunez’s rescue, rushing him out of the bar and into a nearby vehicle. Police were notified of the incident around 2 AM. They rushed to the scene where they found the victim with several wounds to his body. EMS arrived and transported Nunez to the hospital. He died as a result of the shooting.
Police reviewed some of the footage but have not yet identified the suspect involved with the case. Police have an idea of the direction that the suspect headed in but are unsure of his destination following the tragic event. An eyewitness alleged that they saw the man run off and tried to “see what was going on, but there was so much commotion” in the midst of the brawl. Police have yet to reveal what actually started the fight. There have been no arrests made by officers as of yet as the investigation and hunt for the suspect continues.
