I feel like no matter what song you decide to listen to, for example, The Beatles, Kiss, or even Madonna, you as the listener know exactly who you are listening to. Even if you do not fully know the lyrics of the song, there will be no mistaking the artist you are listening to with another musical talent. If you are listening to The Beatles, you know you are listening to The Beatles. But I wonder why this does not extend to modern music?
Often, on the radio, when a song comes on, I often mistake the singer with another musical artist because they sound so similar. Do you think you like that new song by SZA? Well, you actually don’t. You like the new song by Doja Cat. And do you think you like the new album by Megan Thee Stallion? Well, once again, you would be mistaken. You actually like the new album by GloRilla. And don’t think this only applies to female artists. Musical talents such as Alex Warren, Sombr, and even one of my favorite male artists, Conan Gray, also sound very similar in their sound as artists, making me wonder why modern music sound so similar?
I feel like most of the songs by modern artists fall into either one or two categories: A melancholic song about lamenting your lost love or celebrating leaving your ex-love because they treated you wrong. Now, I find nothing wrong with these types of songs. I just feel like in the musical industry, there are just too many of the same type of songs. In the past, there were so many songs that just had a kind of variety we are lacking for today. Instead of creating new, wacky, and different types of songs, we instead fall into often derivative and unoriginal songs that honestly all just sound the same to me.
