Bronx firehouse catches fire, at least 14 injured

On the morning of Friday, March 27, a firehouse in Bedford Park caught on fire, injuring at least 14 firefighters. Firefighters reported receiving a call at 6 am for a report of a fire at 2928 Briggs Ave, which is a two-story firehouse. There was a fire on both floors and was brought under control around 7:36 am, according to Norwood News. Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore held a press conference at the scene and mentioned that one firefighter was on the 1st floor when he noticed the fire. “He immediately alerted everyone in the building to allow them to get out,” She said. She also reported that everyone is okay and only has minor injuries.

The cause of the fire and where it started is still under investigation. It is under suspension that the engine 79’s engine was the cause of the fire, and it spread to the 2nd floor, where the firefighters upstairs had trouble getting down. Aerial ladders and portable ladders arrived quickly, and they were able to escape through a 2nd story window. There is one member who is reported to be at the hospital [Jacobi] with minor injuries and other members being treated and evaluated.

About 60 fire and EMS units arrived on scene which comprised of 165 EMS and firefighters, who responded to the fire, a normal response for what is a 3rd alarm fire. They are in the process of finding somewhere to house the firefighters while the firehouse is being repaired and where they can keep the neighborhood safe.

There we several other fires that happened recently, including one also in the Bronx, which resulted 1 death and 9 injured on Thursday 26. Another one with no injuries in the early hours of Thursday, 26th also in the Bronx.

Last week on March 17th there were 13 people injured in a residental area in the Bronx in a 6 building complex which houses around 7 daycares.

There was 3 Bronx Fire Safety and Education workshop last week in response to these fires.
