Designer Babies and Why It’s Unethical

The first time I heard about designer babies was in a movie called “My sister’s Keeper.” The idea is to be able to change an unborn baby’s features, such as green eyes and red hair. They can also make the baby healthy by removing different diseases. In the movie, a mother and father had a daughter, too, in a sense, be parts for their daughter who was sick. She had gone through dozens of surgeries and eventually wanted it to stop.

Millions of couples can’t have kids and would be happy with anything they got as long as their baby was healthy. I find it extremely unethical to have the gift of pregnancy and want to change it. If that kid grew up and found out their parents had altered their appearance, that would damage their confidence and probably make them feel less loved.

The only time I would see it as ethical is if the baby could die from a disease or other illnesses, or something genetic that the baby could be born with. I know that there is a way to take away the illnesses, and that is totally understandable, but I feel as though it shouldn’t be as expensive as it is, making it harder for parents who are not wealthy to have a chance of a healthier baby. Another reason I would see it as ethical is if the mother could die or develop an illness after the birth.

This is a very controversial topic and can lead to many debates, and unfortunately, there are still people out there who do it. I feel that the latter will never win this, and even if it became illegal, people would still somehow find a way to do it regardless. There will always be people doing things they are not supposed to do.

Designer babies are unethical, but I do think there should be more representation that is against it, more movies and TV like “My sister’s Keeper.” If it were more well-known, maybe it would help educate people and make them realize it’s not a good thing.
