Everybody knows that in politics, the LGBT+ community is a controversial topic. Once I became an adult and figured out my identity, I never thought about the politics that go with it. I grew up thinking that gay marriage should have just been a thing and asking everyone why there were people who were against it.
The way I see it, identity shouldn’t matter to anyone if it doesn’t concern them. There are actually people out there who are against gay marriages and say that it is a sin, a faze, or something they choose. As for different gender identities, people say that anything that is not female or male is made up and say that transgender is something they can choose or just want attention.
But how does a man who loves another man affect straight people? The truth is that it doesn’t; someone across the world could have a loving family, with two fathers, and two children, and be raised just the same as someone who is raised in a “traditional” setting.
I don’t think anyone who identifies as trans or non-binary or anything other than cisgender would choose to be that way because of all the backlash that they receive. The republicans in the world like to take something completely natural and put a negative spin on it. If they don’t agree with something, they have to make a rule against it.
As someone who is asexual, the backlash I personally get confuses me. Why do my personal preferences matter to anyone else? Identity should not be political; it should be private. It should’t of taken till 2015 to make gay marriage legal; there shouldn’t have to be laws protecting trans and gay rights, it should just be something that didn’t need something tragic to happen to make a change.
For the world to be a better place for everyone, we need to accept everyone. We need to start loving people for them, not because we agree with their lifestyle. For the world to heal, we must come together to amend it.
