Literacy rates around the world have seen a significant dip, but the case of literacy within the United States has become an incredibly significant case, especially among the younger demographics. In the past, there was a wide range of programs and teaching methods that helped keep literacy rates up among young people. That said, in recent years, more and more younger students have found it hard to even fully complete a book.
This is why programs that provide incentives towards reading often lead to better results. One of the best examples of this comes from Pizza Hut’s Book It program. For those unaware, Pizza Hut’s Book It program incentivized students to read more by offering certificates towards personal pan pizzas for reaching their monthly reading goals.
It was not the only reading program that incentivised students to read in the 80s and 90s, but it was one of the most popular for a reason. That’s why, when Pizza Hut announced its revival through a mobile app, parents and educators showed excitement. While rewards shouldn’t be the primary reason students should be reading, offering prizes like personal pizzas is a great step to get a steady reading habit going in children.
However, technically, the Book It program never actually died; in fact, Pizza Hut has kept it going since it launched in 1984. Though it would be easy for many to think the program died off since the chain in question has seen many store closings across the United States, with an additional 250 throughout 2026.
Hopefully, the announcement of this Book It app will revitalize interest in the fast food chain and help it slide back into the public eye.
