Many teens today are not reading books as much as previous generations. In my opinion, technology is the biggest reason because phones, social media, and video games grab their attention more quickly than books, which I agree with, as I would rather be on my phone than read a book.
Another reason is that many teens have very busy schedules. Between school, homework, sports, and other activities, they often feel too tired or don’t have enough free time to sit down and read, which causes disengagement from books.
I also think that some schools make reading feel more like a chore than something enjoyable. When students are forced to read books they do not like, they may begin to lose interest in reading altogether. Reading should be like a hobby, not a chore.
Social media has also changed the way people spend their free time. Watching short videos or scrolling through apps is easier than reading a long book, so many teens choose the faster form of entertainment.
In my opinion, not enough teens are introduced to books that match their interests. If they could choose exciting stories, mysteries, or books about topics they enjoy, they might read more often.
Parents and teachers can help by encouraging reading in fun ways instead of making it feel like a requirement. Visiting libraries, reading together, or discussing favorite books can make reading more interesting.
I believe teens are reading fewer books because of technology, busy lives, and a lack of interest in the books they are given. If reading becomes more enjoyable and relevant to their lives, more teens may develop a love for books again.
