Swipe Right for Symmetry: How Beauty Standards Rule Dating Apps

Dating is even easier now with dating apps, where you just swipe right to show you like someone. The bad thing is that people judge people by their looks, not what’s in their profile. It’s very common for people to just say “Oh, he’s cute” and then swipe right, when in reality, he is not compatible with the person because the one swiping has blonde hair instead of brown or vice versa. Most of the time, people don’t even read profiles, and you can definitely tell when someone has not.

If you don’t have a nice picture, people will ignore you. If you have a picture of you with a truck or a fish(I’m talking to you, men), then you might not get what you are looking for. There is the ones that post shirtless pictures who, for the most part, want attention but usually don’t want anything serious. It’s sad that looks outweigh personality. You miss out on a 10 personality because her hair is a little messy or she doesn’t wear makeup. I want a world where people actually cared about personality and not what they are really after.

I’ve tried online dating, and it worked sometimes for me, but I have standards that go beyond beauty. If you are a 10 in looks but a 5 in personality, we wouldn’t work because personality matters much more to me(because I am asexual), but dating apps are going about it the wrong way. I think they should make it so that you can’t post a picture, where you can completely talk to them personality-wise. Block certain key phrases, and then after about 50 messages or more, you can share a picture, and they can’t spam either. That app would be perfect.

Beauty standards in general are severely critical because if you are not curvy and tall with perfect eyesight, then you get swiped left like you don’t matter to them, and that hurts. I don’t think dating apps work that well, but seeing as society is a hookup culture, it works for them very well. I wait for the day when the perfect app exists, for other people’s sake.
