A new initiative by the Mamdani administration to improve New York City government websites was introduced last week. According to the announcement, Public Interest Technology crews will be used to rectify inefficiencies seen within city websites to provide better services to the public.
For Mamdani, this initiative aims to streamline online portals to make them easier for the public to navigate and get the necessary information that New Yorkers need.
“Every confusing step and every dead-end portal makes it more difficult for government to deliver for New Yorkers and for New Yorkers to trust the government is working to deliver for them,” said Mamdani. “Every straightforward experience New Yorkers have on city platforms rebuilds that trust and our PIT crews will help us do exactly that.”
The initiative will start with the hiring of 30 specialists for an initial cost of $5 million. These specialists will form five PIT crews, made up of product managers, designers, engineers, user researchers and data experts who will work alongside City agencies and New Yorkers on accelerated timelines.
These specialists will form five PIT crews, the first building online portals for the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection in support of the recently established Click-to-Cancel rule, which aims to make canceling subscriptions easier for consumers. Three PIT crews will go towards Mamdani’s agenda of affordability and public excellence, and the last to Mamdani’s fund to Advance New York City with funding support by The Rockefeller Foundation.
