An update on New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani’s city-run grocery store plans was unveiled on Monday. According to the announcement, the five new city-run grocery stores will have a core basket of groceries that are 30 percent cheaper. This discount includes fresh produce, meat and seafood, along and an additional 20 categories of refrigerated and unrefrigerated pantry staples, regardless of income. The aim is to have these stores not use dynamic pricing and have static prices locked in.
“A trip to the grocery store shouldn’t spell dread for New Yorkers,” said Mamdani. “That’s why we are guaranteeing a 30% discount on the most common and most critical groceries for families across the five boroughs — including eggs, milk, chicken and fresh fruits and vegetables. These municipal grocery stores are set to give New Yorkers across the five boroughs access to cheap goods, particularly for families and communities that are in food-insecure areas. The Bronx’s Hunts Point will be the first area to have a grocery store open at the end of 2027, with an allocated $70 million in the capital budget from its Mayor in partnership with the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)
Operators for these upcoming grocery stores are in the process of being selected. The Mamdani administration announced that they began requesting for proposals from “qualified grocers or firms” to operate these stores day-to-day, including staffing, merchandising, and labor practices.
