Anna Sui is a Chinese American fashion designer. Born in 1955 to a second-generation Asian-American family, Sui learned the ins and outs of fashion and fabrics from a young age, learning how to sew clothes on her dolls thanks to her mother.
After graduating high school, Sui attended Parsons School of Design before working for the junior sportswear clothing label Charlie’s Girls. Sui built up her skills working for other r sportswear labels and even helped styling photoshoots for Steven Meisel.
Sui’s first major breakthrough was a collection of clothes she brought to a New York Trade Show, which caught the eye of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s in 1979. The big break brought her recognition but also resulted in getting her fired.
That said, Sui bounced back with her clothing line, which he started from her remaining savings. The Anne Sui line stood out from the other fashion lines at the time due to the clear influences of grunge fashion.
Sui finally got a taste of global success at the 1991 Paris Fashion Week when Madonna wore her clothing to the show. It was quickly followed by her first runway show in NYC that same year.
The Anne Sui line is now a global designer brand with stores in the US, Europe and Asia. Outside of clothing, Anne Sui also opened a fragrance and skincare branch.
Anne Sui has collaborated with many publications retail companies over the years including Target, Coach, Fila, O’Neill, Vogue, and even tech companies like Samsung.
