Are Corsets Back In Fashion?

Corsets have been a controversial item of clothing for decades, being one of the poster examples of the extreme regimens of female beauty standards. Since the early 20th century, they had gradually died off from mainstream popularity, only to be worn by those either interested in vintage fashion or deep in the fashion space.

That said, recent years have seen interest in corsets rise within younger generations. While there are multiple reasons for this trend, much of the influence can be found thanks to social media. Fashion trends on apps like TikTok and Instagram, particularly those centered on vintage fashion, have increased interest in corsets. Such trends include regency core,  cottage core, and villain core.

Additionally, celebrities and fashion events have piqued audience interest by incorporating a variety of corset styles.

These spotlights have showcased to many eyes how different modern-day corsets are from the reputation they’ve been given in history. Instead of being regulated as undergarments specifically for contouring the body, modern corsets are now being used as stand-out pieces of their own.

While Bridalwear has been an industry wear corsets have thrived; the recent boost in attention has broken the garment out of its confines in formal wear. From formalwear to streetwear, modern corsets can be worn in a variety of different ways.

However, it isn’t just women who have regained interest in corsets; men have as well. In fact, corsets have slowly been gaining popularity amongst men, mainly within formal wear. It’s a nod to the history of corsets within the fashion of both genders.
