Banksy Artwork that Famously Self Shredded Could Go for Over $5 Million at Auction

Banksy’s art piece known as “Girl With Balloon” was sold for $1.4 million at Sotheby’s in October 2018. Just as an anonymous buyer made the winning bid, a shredder that Banksy embedded in the frame, suddenly activated. Half of the canvas was left shredded and hanging from the picture frame. That artwork, now known as “Love is in the Bin,” is up for sale again, but for several times more than the original price.

The buyer who still went through with their purchase despite half of the art being shredded will soon be vindicated in their choice as auctioneer Sotheby’s said on Friday that “Love is in the Bin” will be offered at a sale in London on October 14th. The piece has a pre-sale estimate of 4 million to 6 million pounds ($5.5 million to $8.3 million). Alex Branczik, chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s describes the artwork as “the ultimate Banksy artwork and a true icon of recent art history.” “When ‘Girl With Balloon’ ‘self-destructed’ in our salesroom, Banksy sparked a global sensation that has since become a cultural phenomenon,” says Branczik about Banksy shredding the artwork. “Girl With Balloon” is one of Banksy’s most well-known images. It consists of a girl reaching out for a heart-shaped balloon and originally stenciled on a wall in east London and has been reproduced all over the world. According to AP News, you can see “Love is in the Bin” as the artwork will travel and go on public display in London, Hong Kong, Taipei and New York before it gets sold next month.
