Right around the calendar is my favorite season of the year. Winter. I know a lot of people don’t like the cold that comes with the winter season and months, but I, for one, absolutely love them through and through. It is the most festive season by far and has so so so many wonderful aspects. Snow, skiing, and hot beverages that burn the roof of your mouth- winter is phenomenal. But there is one part of winter that is special to me specifically, and that is being with family and watching films, but especially watching winter festive theatre performances. And with power vested within me through the beautiful access to the internet, here is my list of some of my favorite holiday theatre shows and some upcoming ones I am definitely hoping to see for myself.
Elf the Musical. Normally when I deliver my opinionated list to you all, I go from least favorite or anticipated to most favorite. Not this time, because my love for Elf the Musical overtakes all normal tradition. This is my favorite holiday musical ever; it is such a fun experience to watch, and normally I am not someone who is fond of live performances over theatrical releases, but Elf the Musical is the sole exemption to this and is one of truly a marvelous watch, especially for those who already like the movie.
Call me basic, but A Christmas Carol, in my opinion, is how you make a performance truly be so memorable. It has so many of my favorite set pieces, and the costume designs just breathe the passion and love that was seeped into them. And it takes such a beautiful story and pushes one of the most passionate and heartwarming art forms into it. I am hoping this year I can visit Ford’s Theatre this holiday season to see it live in person(fingers crossed).
Speaking of seeing live shows, one that I will be seeing for sure is the Washington Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker. Another absolute festive classic that I know the Washington Ballet will absolutely knock out of the water. And if you haven’t seen any performance of The Nutcracker, I beg you to go watch it, and if possible, in your area, since it is this time of year, very soon see it performed live. Watching a live performance recorded is great, but the atmospheric feeling you get from being in the moment changes perspective on everything.
