South African house DJ, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, also known as Black Coffee, was born in Mthatha, Eastern Cape in South Africa, surrounded by music and musicians, influenced by his uncle’s extensive reggae collection. He threw himself into music even more when he was run down by a taxi in a politically motivated attack in his town. He eventually ended up studying music theory long-term, majoring in jazz. He later dropped out and, two years later, released his debut album, Home-Brewed, in 2007. From there, he went on to make multiple other albums.

Black Coffee’s sound is very unique as it mixes Afrocentric flow and rhythm with a house beat and deep bass. Recently, he has been the primary producer of Drakes’s new album, Honestly, Nevermind.
