Colby Covington Comes Out on Top in his Match against Ex-Best Friend and Rival, Jorge Masvidal

Anyone watching UFC 272 this past Saturday, March 5, can say the match between ex-best friends and rivals Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal did not disappoint.

Colby Covington’s win was a surprise as Masvidal seemed like a fan-favorite from the beginning of the match. Fans openly booed the loud-mouth, standout Colby Covington as he dominated the ring, besting Masvidal with his wrestling technique in the main card UFC 272 fight hosted at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Covington wins in a unanimous decision, winning by scores of 49-46, 50-44, and 50-45.

In Covington’s post-fight news conference, he said, “It wasn’t my best performance. Just a lot of emotions going into it. That was a real friend of mine at one point in my career. … I let my emotions get the best of me. But it was still dominant. I showed the world how good I was.”

After being declared the winner, and securing what’ll probably be known as the best fight of his career, Colby Covington calls out another one of his former training partners, Dustin Poirier (who he likes to refer to as “Louisiana swamp trash”).  Covington challenges another rival as he wants to be “very active” this year, hoping to fight again in July.

As for Jorge Masvidal, the loss humbles him. He had great moments throughout the fight, but ultimately lost against Covington’s skill as a wrestler.

“I should have had more moments like that, but I was off today,” Jorge Masvidal comments. “I didn’t have it.”

Former friends, teammates, roommates, and training partners turned rivals— this fight was about settling the score. Covington and Masvidal’s rival still stands as Masvidal hopes for a second chance to take on Covington.
