Could The Tarrifs Repopularize Thrift Shopping?

The fashion industry, like all other industries within the United States, is bracing for the impending impact of President Trump’s latest tariffs. The expected price jumps will lead to millions of clothing items lying stagnant on shelves. Now, with more people than ever before likely unable to shop from popular branded clothing stores, alternatives will most definitely be sought out.

Thrifting surged in popularity during the early 2010s due to the rise in sustainability awareness within the younger generation. It was most likely due to the hipster fashion trend prioritizing vintage clothing. The popular song Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis helped the trend rise to the mainstream.

Unfortunately, while thrifting still held onto its popularity, many people caved towards fast fashion due to its affordable costs, ease of distribution, and ability to keep up with popular trends. While thrifting has its faults the fast fashion industry’s problems have come to a head, and Trump’s new tariffs may as well be its death sentence.

With so much of the US’s clothing being made overseas, prices will rise, leading to consumers leaving their favorite brands and fast fashion sites now that they no longer have these affordable prices.

While there isn’t a perfect solution, thrifting could more than likely become an answer to clothes shopping within the United States. Not only will it help keep clothing waste down, thrifting will no doubt help connect people within their local community. Additionally, thrifting can also become a lucrative alternative source of income for people.

That said, even thrifted items aren’t immune from soaring prices, especially if the particular items are highly sought after and in limited supply.
