Ex-Trump Advisor Michael Flynn Says U.S. Should Have “One Religion”

Former national security advisor under former President Donald Trump, Michael Flynn, calls for “one religion” in the U.S. in order to “win the battle of good versus evil.” Flynn made his statement  at a rally staged in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday by the Christian organization American Faith. His words outwardly disregard the First Amendment that protects people’s freedom of religion where Congress “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Immediately after his remarks, Flynn has been criticized for his outrageous comments. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who has known Flynn for years, stated, “The Mike Flynn of today is not the Mike Flynn of prior to 2014 that I know” and that Flynn appears to be “unhinged.” Dem. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina condemned Flynn’s attack on the First Amendment saying, “This country was (founded) on independent and religious freedoms. Folks left to come here, in search of these freedoms. Now, he would love to see that taken away.” Minnesota Dem. Ilhan Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, simply tweeted, “These people hate the US constitution.” Mark Netting, a retired army general, called Flynn “an embarrassment to the US army,” as Flynn himself is also a retired general.

Since leaving the Trump administration, Flynn has emerged as an influential figure for the far right, has been linked to the conspiracy group QAnon, and advocating for armed insurrection.
