Have you ever worn a suit and felt like it was too stuffy, like you were becoming almost like a mannequin, or you felt like a clothes hangar was in your back, but you couldn’t get it out? That’s how most top-of-the-line suits feel; unlike regular clothes, suits are designed around a certain body type regardless of size. These fancy suits and dresses meant for galas, funerals, and weddings typically forgo comfort to maximize that fancy, serious look that these parties “require” due to dated beauty standards. While modern times offer a lot more for people of various sizes, I think the idea of fancy suits and dresses should accommodate much more comfortable options without the need for a tailor.
Custom-made suits typically cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Non-custom-made suits also cost hundreds of dollars, but they’re far cheaper than a custom-made suit. Having options for comfort and size shouldn’t come at a ludicrous extra cost.
When one thinks of comfort clothes, there are gym clothes, flexible shorts and shirts, and pajama clothing. Outside of that, clothing’s more of a fashion statement with some effort put into comfort but not enough, since there are only certain clothes that fit a variety of sizes. Otherwise, it’s just small, medium, large, and occasionally extra-large sizes.
There should always be sizes from small to 3XL for every size to accommodate most people’s sizes.
Outdated beauty standards that deemed beauty through certain masculine and feminine features are slowly changing with time; we should aim to preserve the traditions of weddings, funerals, and galas and the fashion styles of our modern-day clothes while replacing the outdated beauty standards with modern standards that accommodate those of all shapes and sizes. Nobody should ever have to feel stuffy in the clothes they wear, especially with the rising temperatures every year. Some clothes feel like furnaces, and no pair of clothing should feel painful to wear.
