Governor Kathy Hochul, who became New York’s first female governor in 2021, secured a second full term after defeating Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman. The midterm election race was called in just about 30 minutes after polls closed, with Hochul defeating Nassau County Executive Blakeman by a 20-point margin statewide.
Most of the differences in the result came down to the vast difference in strategy used by the candidates. Gov. Hochul appeared alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, focused almost all of her campaign in the city. In contrast, Executive Blakeman focused his efforts on more moderate neighborhoods and suburban counties. This difference in campaigning led to Hochul receiving 75% of the vote in New York, while Blakeman finished with less than 25%.
Following her electoral win, Gov. Hochul at her victory celebration stated: “Serving you has taught me that leadership isn’t just about having the courage to make the tough calls. It’s about having the humility to recognize what you can do better. Through it all, I answer to no one except the people of New York. Even in our darkest days, I said, do not bet against New York ever.”
Executive Blakeman also addressed supporters in Nassau County after the loss and conceded, saying, “Now we pull together. We move forward. We have the best interest of the people in our hearts. The final analysis we are all Americans. May God bless you all and God bless America. Thank you!” as well as saying, “I just got off the phone with Governor Hochul. I told her she ran a great race …. now we all have to unify to make better this great state of New York,”.
New York voters didn’t just reelect Gov. Kathy Hochul either on election day. New York made history, with Hochul’s reelection and the election of Adrienne Adams as lieutenant governor, New York will have its first all-female statewide executive leadership team, a historic night for the city on a very important day.
