Have Trenchcoats Made A Comeback?

There once was a time when trench coats were one of the most popular articles of clothing. After being worn by soldiers in both world wars, trench coats were seen as stylish business attire. In film and television, trench coats became a popular attire for characters in the noir and detective genres to wear. Additionally, the trenchcoat found a home in numerous subcultures, including the metal and goth scenes.

Unfortunately, despite its widespread popularity, the public perception of trench coats shifted when some individuals involved in high-profile violent incidents began wearing them. Notably, after the Columbine Massacre in the late 90s, which attracted significant media attention to the clothing choice of the perpetrators, trench coats became associated in the public mind with such negative events. This visibility, along with their practical use for concealing items, led some online subcultures and groups with controversial reputations to adopt the garment.

This change in perception has led many to stereotype trench coats as a symbol for questionable individuals. Thankfully, it seems that perception is beginning to change. Recent trends have seen more women adopt the clothing as something versatile, for business, casual, or formal settings. Additionally, modern trench coats offer a variety of styles in length, color and fabric.

While the unfortunate reputation around trench coats still remains, the effort to turn it around into something positive is there. With enough drive from buyers and fashion trends online, there will likely be more people walking about wearing trench coats in the future.
