Kendrick Lamar: The Pulitzer Punisher in “Not Like Us” (Op-Ed)

Two months after the release of the chart topping “Not Like Us”, Kendrick Lamar released the music video on July 4th, which has now amassed over 34 million views. This is the last song that Kendrick put out in response to his beef with Canadian artist and rapper Drake. “Not Like Us” is widely praised as the feud’s most outstanding track, and I believe was the nail in the coffin for the fighting.

Now charting for eight weeks, “Not Like Us” continues to see consistent radio play and public attention. What a lot of people don’t hear is Drake’s response to the diss, in a song titled “The Heart Part 6”, referencing Lamar’s ongoing song series called “The Heart”, the last of which being “The Heart Part 5” on Lamar’s most recent album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. Widely regarded as the worst song of the feud, Drake goes on to dig himself deeper into the pedophilia accusations against him, and went on to garner over 1.5 million dislikes on YouTube.

With the beef at its end and Lamar the clear winner, where do the two go from here? Kendrick is continuing his victory parade in his home city of Compton with the release of the “Not Like Us” video, also filmed in the city. As for Drake, he has been featured on tracks with Sexyy Red and Camila Cabello, but has made no comments regarding the beef since the release of “The Heart Part 6”.

Looking toward the future, Kendrick Lamar is rumored to release his sixth studio album by the end of the year. With “Not Like Us” sure to be on the track list, fans are left to wonder if he will call anyone else out on the album. Drake hasn’t shared any news regarding an upcoming album, seemingly because his last studio album, For All The Dogs, was well-received after being released in October last year. It may be some time before new music comes from either artist, but we can hope it performs as well as “Not Like Us” does, the constant reminder of Kendrick’s talent.
