The New York Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship in 53 years. After beating the San Antonio Spurs this summer in the NBA Finals(yes, I am still a little salty about the loss). This week, during the opening night of the 2026-27 NBA season, the New York Knicks started their season by raising their 2025–26 World Champions banner at Madison Square Garden, ending a 5-decade drought.
For millions, this championship meant everything. After years and decades of the New York Knicks not being a top league team inside the biggest city in the country, millions of fans spent years waiting and waiting for this moment to come. And after 53 years, the moment finally came. This wasn’t just a win for the current Knicks players and fans but was a celebration of the decade of talent that left blood, sweat, and tears on the court of Madison Square Garden.
They revealed the blue banner with the text of 2025-26 World Champions in the rafters next to the previous two championship wins the franchise holds. And the championship rings gifted to the players might be one of the greatest pieces of jewelry I have ever seen be gifted to a sports team. I know it’s a New York team and arguably the second biggest NBA franchise behind the Lakers, but the ring’s size and design, holding almost 800 diamonds and sapphires, is absurd and left me in awe.
Then the best part is the removable top of the ring that has a mini replica of Madison Square Garden inside with the Knicks court inside as well. The video that played as well did a phenomenal job of showcasing the history of not just the Knicks legends like Walt Frazier, who handed out the rings, but the die-hard Knicks fans like actor Ben Stiller.
Although an amazing night to remember, after the celebrations, the Knicks ended up losing the game to the newly assembled Philadelphia 76ers, losing 106-100 in the season opener as they look to repeat last season and win another NBA championship.
