Korean ‘color analysis’ technique: Is it the next big thing?

Korea, a country that some people may consider as the world’s beauty capital, is responsible for producing the latest beauty trends that go viral around the world. One of those trends being the new and fascinating color analysis.

Color analysis is based on a trend from the 80s that would essentially group people into seasons based on their skin tone and eye color. People’s features were analyzed to figure out the shades of their undertones, which can be a helpful step in the process of deciding which skincare or makeup products work best for you. This method has proven to be very useful to people who are trying to figure out the product that will help with dark circles, wrinkles, and freckles.

The service ranges anywhere from $75 to $250 and the process is quite simple. Each client sits facing a mirror where they will be draped with various cloths and colors to determine which best matches their skin. In videos of this process, you can watch as one color brightens someone’s face and accentuates their features, while another color will wash someone out and be very unflattering. The stylist then starts to narrow down the options to the colors that are most suitable for their client. For example, if someone has red undertones, they may find that cool winter tones will help to cancel out the redness of their complexion.

Like so many trends from the 80’s and 90’s, social media has helped to give the color analysis trend a second chance. Sohee Bae, the founder of Color Society in Hongdae in Seoul, has commented on the impact of social media on this new beauty trend.

“It regained its popularity in 2020, and I think societal lockdown due to COVID-19 encouraged individuals to focus on themselves,” she said.

Without social media, this trend wouldn’t be growing as rapidly as it currently is. Suh, the owner of Omyo Color Studio, says she noticed an increase in bookings in the past couple of months. She also added that almost all of her clients have found her via TikTok. With social media only growing every day, who knows what new beauty trends are in our future?
