We’re traveling way back in time for this Pick of the Month: Earvin “Magic” Johnson! Legendary basketball star Magic Johnson was born on August 14th, 1959. One of ten children to parents, Earvin Johnson Sr. and Christine Johnson, this star did not have an easy road to success. Struggling with poverty, bullying, and a learning disability, Johnson originally struggled to find his footing both at home and at school until he discovered his love of basketball.

Growing up in an athletic household was really a blessing for Johnson. With his mother playing basketball as a child and his father playing basketball in high school, Johnson’s passion for the sport not only grew, but so did his talents and skills as well on the court!

While retired from the sport of basketball, Johnson is still active in 2026! A businessman, philanthropist, and sports mogul, Johnson sure has his hands full with his achievements and responsibilities outside of basketball and athletic endeavors. As he hangs in the Hall of Fame, Johnson will always have a special place in our hearts at NYC Tastemakers!
