A proposal to host an upcoming Winter Olympics game is in the works, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s office on Monday. According to AP News, the announcement stated that an exploratory committee will be formed to discuss the possibility of hosting the Winter Olympics, proposing that New York state co-host with Lake Placid. It would be a similar format to Milan and Cortina, which hosted this year’s games.
Lake Placid has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, once in 1932 and the other in 1980, which is often referred to as the year of the “Miracle on Ice.” Additionally, it was marked in a 2022 climate change study as one of the few former hosts to retain ideal weather for the Winter Games by 2050.
Outside of that, Lake Placid was used as an emergency backup for sliding sports at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The leading chair of the exploratory committee is set to be the President and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, Ashley Walden. An official bid will not be made until the committee completes its work, which was announced to take about a full year. New York Assemblyman Robert Carroll was also named to be a part of the committee.
The earliest year for New York to host was determined to be 2042, as Salt Lake City is set to host in 2034, and Switzerland is in the running for 2038. The 2030 Winter Olympics are set for the French Alps.
