NYC Welcomes Its First Full-Scale Casino

A first-of-its-kind casino finally opens in New York City. Resorts World, owned by Malaysia-based company Genting, opened its doors in South Ozone Park on Tuesday, hosting over 1,200 new jobs. It’s one of three casino licenses Genting won over other giants in the gaming space, including Las Vegas Sands, Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, and more. Resorts World’s opening marks the first full-sized casino to ever open in the city’s history. Resorts World got its license on December 15th, 2025.

Resorts World currently has a monopoly in the city, as it’s the first of three planned casinos to open. The casino will be playing 63% in state taxes on slots revenue and 30% taxes on table game revenue. That said, according to its license, the company included a clause in the bid that its tax rate will be lower once its competing casinos are open for business.

The second casino is expected to be built on a Bronx golf course by Bally, while the third is being planned in a partnership between Hard Rock and Mets owner Steve Cohen near the Citi Field stadium. That said, it will take years for those casinos to open. However, once opened, the three casinos are expected to generate up to $7 billion in gaming tax revenue over the next 10 years.

Regardless, the criticism against these casinos has not stopped. Many opponents see the possible revenue gained by these casinos as not worth the cost. Locals in particular worry about a potential rise in crime, traffic, and other gambling-related issues in the surrounding area.
