Olivia Rodrigo and Sustainable Fashion

Not only is Olivia Rodrigo a talented singer-songwriter, but she has also proven herself to be a fashion icon. Her style can be most accurately described as Gen Z style mixed with Y2K and a touch of grunge.

The singer recently talked about her love for sustainable fashion, which is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice.

During an interview, Rodrigo discussed how she discovered sustainable fashion. “A couple years ago, I watched this documentary called The True Cost on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it, you should totally check it out. At the time, I was starting to think about how my personal actions affected our environment for the first time,” she said.

She continued, “It’s sort of a scary thing to be fourteen and realize your generation is nearing tipping points for irreversible damage to the planet.” Rodrigo said that the documentary changed her way of consuming fashion.

“Up until that point, my favorite thing was to go to the mall and buy clothes that were way too cheap and wear the item once,” she said.

“I realized I couldn’t keep up those habits if I truly cared about the planet,” said Rodrigo. “The fashion industry is also notorious for taking advantage of women and children in less-developed countries. All that to say, I’ve spent the last few years trying to keep my clothing consumption as sustainable as I can.”

The Disney star has been very open about her love for thrift shopping and using online secondhand platforms such as Depop. She can often be seen wearing vintage pieces or accessories, but her sustainable fashion didn’t stop there.

Most of the items in her merchandise are made in the U.S. with 100% organic cotton. Rodrigo’s commitment to sustainable fashion is truly admirable and should be a great example for all shoppers.
