Phil Donahue dies at 88

Sunday night TV legend Phil Donahue passed away at the age of 88. The cause of death was said to be a “long illness”. In a statement to CNN the family said, “Donahue died Sunday night at home surrounded by his family, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie.” At this time, there has been no further information on the death released

“The Phil Donahue Show” changed talk shows forever as Donahue did things his way. He was the first to have shows discussing niche and sensitive topics like civil rights, homosexuality, feminism, and many more.

Oprah Winfrey commented on Donahue’s death saying, “There wouldn’t have been an Oprah Show without Phil Donahue being the first to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be taken seriously. He was a pioneer. I’m glad I got to thank him for it. Rest in peace Phil”.  She even went as far as to say, “There wouldn’t have been an Oprah Show without Phil Donahue,” on Instagram.

Some other big names in the industry took the time to comment on the tragic loss of Donahue as well. Piers Morgan took to X, posting an image of him and Donahue and writing, “RIP Phil Donahue, 88. One of the true trail-blazing icons of American television. He hosted over 6,000 talk shows, and was the first to interact with a studio audience. Interviewing him for CNN a few years ago lived up to every expectation… such a clever, interesting man.”

TV Host Andy Cohen also posted on social media saying, “Phil Donahue was a singular talent who revolutionized daytime television, and the talk show itself. He also was an outspoken advocate for the gay community at a time when we had none. Thank you Phil Donahue! RIP”

The impact that Donahue had on the media field is evident, and without him, talk shows would not be the way they are today.
