Reggaeton Artist of the Month for December 2022

Bio

Spanish singer Rosalia Vila Tobella, better known by her stage name Rosala, was born on September 25, 1992. She was born and raised in the suburbs of Barcelona, and because of her eclectic musical tastes, she has been called an “untypical pop star.” In addition to performing at musical bars and weddings, she studied musicology at the Catalonia College of Music after becoming enthralled by Spanish folk music at the age of 13. Los Angeles, a 2017 cover album she made with Raül Refree, and the baccalaureate project El Mal Querer helped her graduate with honors (2018).

The singles “Malamente” and “Pienso en Tu Mirá,” which caught the attention of the Spanish general public and were released to universal critical acclaim, were the result of reimagining flamenco by fusing it with pop and hip-hop music. El Mal Querer, which won the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was included in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, marked Rosala’s entry into the global music scene.

The most local artist is Rosala, who has amassed ten number-one singles in her home nation over the course of her career. She has also received numerous awards, including a Grammy, eleven Latin Grammys (two of which were for Album of the Year), four MTV Video Music Awards, an MTV Europe Music Award, two UK Music Video Awards, and two Premio Ruidoso. She received the Rising Star Award from Billboard in 2019 for “changing the sound of today’s mainstream music with her fresh flamenco-influenced pop,” and she made Grammy history by becoming the first Spanish-singing act to be nominated for Best New Artist.
