Steps you shouldn’t skip in your makeup routine (Op-Ed)

In the few years that I’ve been applying makeup, I’ve learned a great deal, but one of the things I’ve learned is that the more strategic you are with how you apply makeup, the better you look once you’ve finished applying it. It doesn’t matter how much or how little of it you apply or even the value of the products you can still end up looking amazing, but being calculated with what you do and don’t do first helps enormously.

What you do with your face when you don’t have any products applied is just as important as what you do when there are; the first and most important step that you must never skip in your makeup routine is washing your face! It is super important that your face is clean, I use CeraVe’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser and some warm water. Hydrating your skin keeps it fresh, young, and healthy.

The second most important step is… you guessed it: moisturizing. I cannot stress how important moisturizing is it is almost as important as the first step. A lot of girls just slap makeup on their face without washing or moisturizing it; this can cause a lot of harm to your skin in the long run, harm that even makeup can’t cover, and that is why it is so important.

Before you apply your foundation you should always apply a moisturizer or primer. I use e.l.f’s Hydrating Face Primer and e.l.f’s Daily Hydration Moisturizer. I also use Vaseline, as I have dry skin, and this keeps my skin glowing, shiny, and gooey.

Last but not least: hydrate your lips. Always be sure to apply chapstick before you add lipstick, lip liner, or lip gloss. Whenever I skipped this step, I ended up regretting it because it never mattered how gorgeous my lipstick shade was, my lips were still chapped, dry, and just… eww, this is why hydrating your lips is so important. You can use whichever chapstick brand you wish, anyone works, I personally love Blistex as well as Vaseline (you can probably tell it is one of my beauty secrets).

Once you have finished these three crucial steps you are ready to start applying makeup!
