Teen Shot on Subway in Queens

Just after 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, a 15-year-old boy was shot on a subway train. According to police, the incident happened during the evening rush hour aboard a Manhattan-bound A train, near the 80th Street Station. Reports show that a fight seems to have gotten out of hand between 3 teenage boys, including the victim. The other two, now suspects, fled from the scene as the train arrived at the station.

The victim was shot multiple times, including at least once in the chest. Police rushed the teen to Jamaica Hospital, where as of 7:45 p.m., “the victim’s condition improved,” and he is expected to remain in stable condition. The victim’s identity has not been released by police as he is a minor. Police stated that no one else appears to have been injured in the original fight or scramble to escape the train.

Eyewitnesses say that the shooting sent the riders on the crowded train “ducking for cover.” Those on the train were desperate to get out once the doors opened. One witness, Junior White, explained, “It was pandemonium, everybody just took off running, man. Including the two guys, the teenagers that were fighting.” White went on to describe the moments immediately following the shooting, “We all jumped onto the floor and stayed below, and the doorman opened the doors up and some people ran out, but I stayed below. Some people saw the guys who did it and identified to the police how they looked.”

Following the event, police took two teens into custody as people of interest. However, they have both been released. Police are still investigating to determine the cause of the fight and whether the victim knew the shooter. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, upon arriving at the scene, stated, “Any time there is a shooting on a train, it is a tragedy for the city of New York, and so we hope to get many more of these weapons off the street and out of the hands of our young people.”

Mayor Mamdani reacted to the situation with a post on social media, saying, “I am relieved he is expected to survive. This was an unacceptable incident; violence like this has no place on our subway system, and my administration is committed to doing everything in our power to make every New Yorker — especially children — safe on their daily commutes.”

According to officials, some trains are expected to see severe disruptions between Manhattan and Queens as the police continue to conduct their investigation. Police continue to canvas the area around the 80th Street station and are “urging anyone who recorded the incident” to share those videos with the police.
