Early Tuesday morning, the skies over New York and New Jersey briefly transformed into something that looked more at home beneath the ocean than above it. A glowing, jellyfish-shaped cloud appeared across the dark sky, leaving early risers wondering what exactly they were seeing.
The answer was not a weather phenomenon or a mysterious object from space. Instead, the unusual display was created by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The rocket lifted off at approximately 5:33 a.m. Tuesday, carrying 29 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit.
As the rocket climbed higher into the atmosphere, its exhaust plume expanded outward. Because the launch occurred shortly before sunrise, sunlight was able to illuminate the plume high above the ground while much of the surface was still in darkness. The combination created a glowing, translucent shape that spread across the sky like the tentacles of a giant jellyfish.
The phenomenon is commonly called the “jellyfish effect.” While rocket launches are becoming increasingly common, the conditions needed to create this particular spectacle are much more unusual. The timing of the launch has to line up with twilight, allowing sunlight to reach the rocket’s exhaust at high altitude while observers below remain in darkness.
For people across the East Coast, that alignment created an unexpected morning show. Reports indicate the phenomenon could be seen from parts of New York and New Jersey, with similar sightings farther south along the East Coast. Some observers captured photographs and videos of the glowing plume moving across the sky.
The rocket itself was also notable. The Falcon 9 booster used for Tuesday’s mission completed its 37th launch and landing, marking another milestone for SpaceX’s reusable rocket program. The mission successfully deployed the Starlink satellites into orbit before the first-stage booster landed on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean.
Although the sight may have looked like a strange cloud forming naturally, it was actually a temporary creation of human activity and atmospheric conditions. The exhaust gases expanded rapidly in the thin upper atmosphere, while sunlight reflected from the plume, producing the bright appearance visible from hundreds of miles away.
The spectacle did not last long. According to reports from Tuesday morning, the glowing cloud appeared around 5:45 a.m. and disappeared shortly after 6 a.m.
For those who happened to look toward the sky at just the right moment, an ordinary Tuesday morning became an extraordinary view of modern spaceflight. What looked like a mysterious jellyfish floating above the Northeast was, in reality, a reminder that rocket launches can sometimes turn the atmosphere itself into part of the show.
