When it comes to funding for people with disabilities, most communities lack services to help them. I live in a small town, and there is barely anything for people with disabilities like anxiety, depression, autism, Adhd and others. These disabilities are overlooked in school and other places such as work or even public transportation.
Even the programs that do provide help, like helping with rent or electric are very unfunded and can’t give money to everyone, even if they need it more than others that have gotten it. A lot of little cities or towns don’t even provide services for the public because they don’t have any money to fund them.
In school, students with disabilities don’t get the proper funding for special classrooms or even schools that help them get the education they need and accommodations for neurodivergent people. Jobs rarely have accommodations and services for the disabled and often fire them because they don’t want to accommodate their needs, such as doing simple tasks like gathering carts or stocking shelves in a grocery store.
I was not diagnosed with autism until after I was done with high school and was an adult. I never got the help I needed from classes or jobs I’ve had in the past that would have been extremely helpful. A lot of small towns and cities do not have public transportation either, and that is hard on people with no vehicle, or who can’t drive or are in a wheelchair.
Most cities put their funding in fixing roads and adding new buildings rather than helping people with disabilities, and that is the problem with living in smaller cities. Everyone deserves to be able to have help with services, and I think that there should be more funding toward those services.
If we spent more money on public transportation, work and school accommodations, and other support for the disabled, I think more cities would be noticed, and people would be more likely to move there because of the services they provide. Everyone deserves the same help no matter the disability!
