The Unique Dynamic Between the Yankees and the Mets

The New York Yankees and New York Mets are two baseball teams known for their long-standing rivalry—so much so that a name was invented for it: the subway series.

The Subway series may be a joke to those outside of New York, but fans can attest that this rivalry can even cause rifts between families.

In the 62 years since the Mets became a team, their rivalry with the Yankees has been nothing short of bitter. The Mets were founded in 1962 to replace the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. The Mets play in the National League of the East Division of the MLB, while the Yankees play for the American League of the East Division.

Since 1997, the two teams have played each other 151 times, including exhibition games, in every regular season.

The New York Yankees have won against the Mets 80 times in the regular season while the Mets won 66 times, but the longest win streak is held by the Mets from May 27, 2013, to May 13, 2014.

The Yankees last won the World Series in 2009 and the Mets in 1986, but neither have returned since.

Let’s not forget one of the most pivotal games in the Subway series, the 2000 World Series. The 96th edition of the World Series showcased the Yankees vs. the Mets, the first and only time the two teams faced off in the World Series. The New York Yankees defeated the Mets 4-1.

Tensions were high during the 2000s World Series, and two fans were even ejected from game 4 for intentionally grabbing a player. The two were later banned from the World Series indefinitely.

Will this long-standing rivalry end? Probably not. While the two teams have been relatively civil to each other in recent years, the rivalry’s historical roots are too deep to forgive and forget.

Their next matchup will be on May 16, 2025, who will win this time?
