When we think of characters on a tv show most of the time friends become more than friends and then it becomes the whole story. But what about when the characters are just really good friends and do not end up together. Where it’s just that, friendship, we need more of that. I’ve seen so many storylines where it becomes the main focus and just ruins the whole vibe of the show.
As a aromantic asexual I want more friendship shows, where the characters don’t get together and are just vibing on a completely platonic relationship. For example, Phoebe from the show Friends, did not end up with any of the characters of the main cast, she ended up with someone completely different, same with Joey. And as much as I loved Chandler and Monica’s romantic storyline, it could survive without it, although I do wish they would do a sequel with their kids being friends.
Either way we need more shows, especially ones with teenagers and not just adults, that have platonic relationships. Shows like Danny Phantom did a great job at that, but eventually the two main characters do end up together, but they don’t officially get together till the last movie/episodes. This worked very well and I don’t really mind them being together in the end but shows need to show young children, and teenagers, that you can be friends, just friends and love them, just not romantically.
Unfortunately the TV world revolves around a couple that meets, hangs out, falls in love and becomes a couple which is fine for some stories, but not everything needs a side romantic story, and we need to enjoy entertainment without the romance. Games and books have done it, even movies have done it and sure there are some TV shows that have no romance but most of the time, it slips in.
Entertainment needs to show people that friendship matters more than romance and relationship and marriage, and we as a society needs to learn that too because some people want friends, not more.
