In today’s world, we see music dominate headlines globally. Music is a common symbol of community, culture, and a sense of freedom and belonging. The most common types of music are rap, pop, indie, rock, and other lively styles of music, mainly listened to by youth. But there is one odd genre when compared to rap or pop: country.
Country music stands out differently when compared to rap or pop because it is slower and more of an “olden days” type of music. This is where the controversy and dislike of country music comes from.
In my opinion, many people dislike country music because it is very different from the music that is most popular today. Rap and pop usually have faster beats and modern sounds, while country focuses more on storytelling and traditional instruments. Some people find that less exciting. And honestly, I feel the same way. I prefer more upbeat tones, like rap or pop, and just find the country voice not to my preference.
Country music is also often associated with rural lifestyles like farm lands, suburbs, and older traditions. Because of this, some people assume they will not enjoy it before they even give it a chance. And who knows, some people genuinely may be missing out on something they will enjoy. Others feel that many country songs talk about similar topics, such as small towns, trucks, and heartbreak, which can make the genre seem repetitive, which is common amongst this genre.
Even though country music receives criticism, music is based on personal taste. What one person dislikes, another person may enjoy. For example, take me, I am not an avid fan of the country genre, but many people I am friends with particularly enjoy it.
For many listeners, country music’s storytelling and emotional messages are exactly what make it appealing, and we should never judge anyone for their music preferences but rather respect perspectives.
