Flashback Artist of the Month for May 2023

Bio

Whitney Houston will always be remembered as one of the greats. From humble beginnings singing in a church choir to going on a world tour, anyone who got to hear her voice knew she was blessed with this talent for singing. Houston learned all she knew about singing from her mother, who was also a singer. Houston had always wanted to be a singer and turned to her mother when she was ready to get serious. On top of her mother’s knowledge, talent, and support, Houston, no doubt, came from a powerhouse pedigree, having Dionne Warwick as a first cousin and Aretha Franklin as a godmother. With her talent, it did not take long for Houston to get signed.

Houston had a forbidden love with Robyn Crawford when she was younger. From the pressures of society and religion, she decided to abstain from this relationship. However, Robyn stayed as Houston’s longtime assistant and friend throughout her career. Houston instead married “bad boy” Bobby Brown. They had a daughter and a fifteen-year marriage before divorcing. It is not a secret that Houston struggled with addiction for most of her life. Probably due to the amount of pressure she experienced every day to be the best.

Despite her struggles, Houston is still remembered as “The Voice”, and she is still one of the bestselling music artists of all time, with over 200 million records sold worldwide.
